I think undoing the boot makes it quite easy to push the wire through and get it on the other side of the boot before feeding it through the firewall.

When I installed gauges, I ran 4 wires. 3 for the gauge senders and a spare. I ended up using the spare for the boost gauge later. Made adding that a lot easier. I ran my aux brake break-away wire through it for towing the Jeep behind the motorhome.
